Working in a restaurant should be a prerequisite for all SF Tech and Brooklyn media jobs.

That story deserves a round of applause. You told it beautifully. The writing didn't feel rushed, but I felt the rising tension and frantic effort behind the words. What a cool experience!

I am harboring dreams of retiring from city government and working as a prep cook, so I related to this so much.

Really great piece. Thanks.

I worked a much less stressful restaurant a long time ago as a kind of combo line/sous/prep guy but the fundamental challenge of having to work to whatever happens—however many people come in, what you have to do if there’s less of something than you thought, etc. is both incredibly interesting and something I ultimately decided I absolutely did not want to be doing my whole life. Loved it, didn’t want it.

Thanks so much! I’ve told friends I’d love to pop in and help them open a new thing, but otherwise it’s definitely not for me long-term either.

You told the story well I got anxiety flashbacks to boot camp; the last time I had to work with a large group of people under outside pressure.
